This is a wilderness survival site, with special attention to the first 24 hours of a survival emergency. Generally, if we can survive the first day and night, those skills serve us well until rescue.
Currently, we are providing a series of free classes for the Willamette Chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club in Salem Oregon. These classes are suitable for all adults that enter the winter backcountry.
Upcoming Classes: Look for details on other posts as the classes get near. Provided by the Oregon Nordic Club -- free as a community service.

Greetings and Think Snow!
This is the first of our four part series on winter safety, travel and survival for all outdoors enthusiasts. The classroom sessions are each a stand alone class on the topics listed, or when combined as a series give a complete look at winter back country safety and travel.
We would like to invite adults and outdoor leaders to one or all of these classes. Detailed postings on the other sessions will be sent out just after the previous class. If you need early details for your newsletter or web site, please contact us.
Handouts will be provided at the class to attendees.
The final session will be on snow instruction and practice of the skills needed to survive the first night and day of an emergency. This will include route finding, snow shelter building and fire issues. For the hardy and ready, an optional overnight stay will be offered. A great hands on learning experience for the day or weekend.
Thank you for passing this information along, we are thrilled to offer these community education classes as a part of our club’s service to the mid valley region.
